Rookie cards are first year cards from the players in the sports.  They are some of the most sought after cards of players, as it is the first year of a card that is available for a player.  They tend to be the most valuable cards of players, and nowadays many of the rookie cards are autographed and/or have game used pieces of memorabilia.  If you want to invest in a player, rookie cards of them provide the greatest potential for upside in most cases out of any cards of them.  Some of the most famous rookie cards include 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle, 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (technically not a rookie but widely considered his best card), 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson, 1975 Topps George Brett and many more.  Tony Gwynn rookie baseball cards are a great hall of fame rookie card to have in your card collection.

To begin with, Mickey Mantle rookie cards from 1951 Bowman and 1952 Topps are among the most famous baseball rookie cards in existence, as well as among the rarest and most valuable.  1952 Topps Baseball Cards are featured at this page (click the highlighted link for the article).  That year of cards includes the rare high number Mickey Mantle rookie card.  Technically, 1951 Bowman has his rookie card, though the 1952 Topps one is more valuable.  Here is an article for his 1951 Bowman rookie card.  Cal Ripken Jr. rookie card listings are noted here.  1975 Topps baseball cards have great rookie cards and with the recent inclusion of Jim Rice and Gary Carter in the hall of fame, this set has become more appealing in terms of hall of fame rookies.  George Brett and Robin Yount have always lead the way, but the next tier of rookie cards in this year's set is quite strong.  1967 Topps has Rod Carew hall of fame rookie cards.  Nolan Ryan rookie cards are in 1968 Topps.

For more modern baseball rookie cards, Ken Griffey Jr. took the hobby by storm in his rookie year of 1989.  That was the year that Upper Deck began selling baseball cards, and the Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card from 1989 Upper Deck remains his most popular and valuable mainsteam rookie card.  Here is a pictorial article summary and product detailed listing of the 1989 Bowman rookie card of Ken Griffey Jr., a popular card and a decent investment if you ask me.
When considering other great first year cards from the 1980's in baseball, a 1984 Topps Don Mattingly rookie card is a great choice.  The former New York Yankees great had many great years and although he may not make the hall of fame, his rookie card is very popular with collectors.  Darryl Strawberry rookie cards are also included in 1984 baseball card sets.  Rickey Henderson rookie cards are in the 1980 Topps baseball card set.
The 1980 Topps Baseball card set is basically a true vintage set.  The hall of famers that are not rookie cards in the set are quite valuable according to the price guides.  That list is headed by Nolan Ryan.  The best rookie card in the set and basically the only major rookie card is the Rickey Henderson rookie card.  It is a great card to own and is still quite popular and should be for many years to come.  The Rickey Henderson rookie card books at $50-$60 in price guides from what I remember and still does unless it has changed in value.  The Nolan Ryan card books at slightly over $10 or so and the other star cards book a little less.  Common players are about 10 cents each.  Complete sets cost over $100 each and wax boxes are significantly more than that due to the fact that a PSA 10 graded card from this set can be worth a lot of money even if it is a common.  That is an added bonus with vintage cards.
The 1981 Topps set is right on the threshold of being considered a bonafide vintage baseball card set.  I personally recommend that collectors own a set of the regular series and also the traded set.  It is the first year that Topps issued a traded set of 132 cards.  There are rookie cards of Harold Baines, Tim Raines and Fernando Valenzuela (there is an additional rookie card of him in the Traded set as well).  These cards can run about $60-$100 for an unopened wax box and a little bit less than that for a complete master set and a bit less for just a 792 card set.
Unopened baseball card packs can be found at the link in this sentence from the brand new website addition to our community.  Here is an article specific to baseball rookie cards as it explains a bit as to what a rookie card is.
